The Do’s and Don’ts of Summer Weddings

Summer is fast approaching, which means that wedding season is right around the corner as well. Summer is one of the most popular seasons for weddings because it allows newlyweds to celebrate their love while surrounded by the beauty of the great outdoors. An abundance of flowers, warm sunny weather, and vibrant summer colors only add to the appeal. Outdoor weddings are particularly popular in the summer, whether that be a seaside ceremony or a glorious garden party reception. This guide to the do’s and don’ts of summer weddings will ensure that, no matter the venue or theme, your wedding will be a midsummer night’s dream.

Do dress for the occasion

When it comes to the do’s and don’ts of a summer wedding, the most important thing is to do what makes you happy. Your wedding is your time to shine and feel truly beautiful. As such, choose clothing that will make you feel comfortable and confident for your entire wedding day. If you’re planning an outdoor wedding, try to choose fabrics that are lightweight and breathable. This will ensure that your wedding day glow doesn’t become too dewy over the course of the day. When choosing your attire, it’s also important to consider the venue for the ceremony and reception. Beach weddings are very popular in the summer, but walking down a sandy aisle in high heels isn’t the most practical decision. The same goes for garden weddings where heels have an uncanny knack for sinking into the ground with every step. For such venues, consider opting for beautifully embellished flats for your wedding instead. The intricate details will complement your gown perfectly, and the lack of a heel will allow you to dance the night away without fear of sinking into the earth.

Don’t sweat it!

Summer sunshine can be quite relentless. If your wedding reception will take place outdoors, be sure to provide your guests with a space where they can seek momentary reprieve from the sun. For venues where indoor air conditioning is not an option, set up a small tent or establish a seating area in a shaded part of the venue. These areas are a perfect sanctuary for guests looking to get out of the heat or rest their feet after a long night on the dance floor. If your ceremony will take place entirely outdoors, you may also consider providing your guests with a personal cooling device to ensure they stay comfortable for the entire ceremony. Fans are a popular choice for many outdoor weddings and are often customizable with your wedding colors, date, and even the names of the happy couple.

Do send save-the-dates early

Summer is prime vacation time for many people. To ensure that all your friends and family can attend your wedding, it’s important to send your save-the-dates as early as possible. It’s recommended that you send your save-the-dates at least six months before the wedding, though there’s no harm in sending them even earlier. Sending the save-the-dates and invitations as early as possible will ensure that your guests have ample time to rearrange their vacation schedules and get excited for your big day.

Don’t forget the sunscreen

Sunscreen is one of the most important tools a summer bride can have in her arsenal. Even if only a portion of your big day will take place outdoors, sunscreen is an absolute must. Apply sunscreen or a foundation with SPF before applying the rest of your makeup to ensure that you maintain a dewy glow for the entirety of your big day. Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen to your arms and shoulders throughout the day as well. Nothing will throw off your wedding photos like a scorching sunburn. If your wedding will take place outdoors, you may also consider providing small bottles of sunscreen to your guests. The same is true for insect repellant. Mosquitoes are the most horrendous summertime wedding crashers and can wreak havoc on the most beautiful weddings. If bug spray doesn’t pair well with your perfume of choice, consider placing citronella candles around the venue instead. The scent will drive off mosquitos and can even add a lovely ambient glow to the whole affair.

Do serve lighter fare

When planning the menu for your wedding, be sure to choose dishes that are a bit lighter and try to incorporate fresh produce whenever possible. Fruits and vegetables are abundant during summer and make for the perfect addition to any summer wedding menu. A heavy meal will make the summer heat feel even more oppressive and can leave your guests feeling sluggish and tired. A light meal, on the other hand, will make the most of Mother Nature’s bounty and will give your guests the energy they need to dance the night away. A garden-fresh salad, a main dish accompanied by grilled vegetables, and a light and airy cake will make for a lovely meal. Lemon, orange, and pineapple are all popular summer flavors and can add a lovely sweetness to your cake. Frozen treats can be a fun summer alternative to a traditional wedding cake, too. Gelato, popsicles, or ice cream sandwiches can infuse your wedding with a touch of summer fun and nostalgia.
